Kalkan

Kalkan, which is a district of Kas, is an attractive tourism centre, even though it does not have any historical ruins. Situated on the Kas - Fethiye road, Kalkan, or Kalamaki as it was called earlier, is 25 km. from Kas. In the minority exchange of 1922, many of the inhabitants relocated to Greece, and some immigrated to Australia. Those who went to Greece established a village near Athens and named it Kalamaki. Their children still visit Kalkan from time to time.
Until recently, Kalkan's economy was dependent on the manufacture of olive oil and soap. Now it is a tourism centre with its sparkling clean boarding houses and hotels and its restaurants offering a wide variety of tasty dishes. Its new marina is also a favourite stop on the blue cruises, offering the passengers all necessities as well as the opportunity of seeing the three most important cities of the Lycians, Patara, Letoon and Xanthos, in one day.
Tourists staying in Kalkan can also visit the 6 km. distant Kaputas Cavern. This cavern is 50 m. long, 40 m, wide and 15 m. high, and can be entered by boat. The shimmering greens and blues that are reflected from the walls of this immense cavern are incredibly beautiful. The blue waters of the Kaputas Beach close by are excellent for swimming.

2 km. from Kalkan, behind Ince Burun, there is a sea cavern called Guvercinlik Cavern because of the many pigeons living in it. A hundred meters away, there is another, smaller sea cavern called Guvercinlik Ini. There is a road that leads to Inbas Cavern at the Bezirgan village coast.
With its cute white houses wreathed in red and purple bougainvilleas, repaired and turned into boarding houses and restaurants in recent years, Kalkan is an excellent place to rest during the warm winter days, and especially the delightful spring days.
Kalkan is also a good place for walks. For example, the ruins of the antique city of Pirha, on the Bezirgan plateau just above Kalkan can be seen from the verdant village of Bezirgan. The ruins, 850 meters above sea level, can be reached by a 15 minute walk from the village. The side of the mountain is riddled with rock tombs. Sarcophagi are scattered everywhere. There are many rock tombs, connected and richly carved, in the Goldag area between the villages of Bezirgan and Islamlar. There is a beautiful Lycian house-type tomb carved into the rock opposite an ancient oak tree on the road to Gombe from Bezirgan, decorated with carved relieves inside and outside, but which is sadly in disrepair.
